Winnipeg, Manitoba — It’s that time of year—the MPI rebate cheques are here.
Or they’re being mailed out this week, at least.
Manitoba’s public auto insurer expects to put about $328 back into the wallets of drivers as the first 200,000 rebate cheques are on the way to Canada Post.
MPI says that in total, 680,000 cheques will be issued in the coming weeks, for a total rebate amount of $312 million.
“The pandemic has negatively impacted many Manitobans personal finances, but it has also reduced the collision claims to MPI allowing for a rebate,” said Kelvin Goertzen, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, and head of MPI.
“Returning these funds to its customers benefits Manitobans and is in keeping with the mandate of Manitoba Public Insurance.”
This gesture marks the third rebate issued by the company in two years, bringing the approximate total of COVID-19 rebates to about $500 million.
MPI says the rebate is calculated on the Basic Autopac premiums paid between November 22, 2020, and December 9, 2021, and is expected to be about 27 percent of the customer’s annual Basic Autopac premium. Rebate amounts of $10 or less will be credited to the customer’s account.
