Toronto, Ontario — Toronto police recently recovered 556 stolen vehicles, representing a combined value over $27 million according to a district commander, however, not all of these vehicles will be returned to their original owners it would seem.
According to a Toronto Police Service announcement on Wednesday, these vehicles were recovered in an ongoing investigation into ongoing theft waves in Toronto’s west end, resulting in more than 100 people being charged.
The investigation notes almost 2,000 vehicles stolen in 2022 in the west end, with many being Honda CR-Vs and Ford F-150 trucks. The area also saw more than 300 catalytic converter thefts.
Superintendent Ron Taverner, district commander for the Toronto Police’s 22 and 23 divisions, said that rescued cars would go to the insurance company if the insurance has been paid out, and only returned to the original owner if insurance has yet to be paid.
“Thanks to the dedication of our officers, hundreds of stolen vehicles have been recovered before they left the country or were used in support of other crimes,” said Taverner.
“Vehicle theft and its impact on violent crime is a growing issue in Toronto, and it can seriously compromise a victim’s personal safety and well-being. Toronto Police take these crimes seriously, and Project Stallion is proof of that.”
