Mississauga, Ontario — February 28, 2018 — The Subaru Outback and the Cadillac XT5 have been praised for their reverse automatic breaking (RAB) systems by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS). In a report issued last week, the IIHS found graded both models’ systems as ‘superior’ for their ability to automatically prevent collisions from reversing vehicles.

Speaking to reporters from CBS news, the researcher in charge of the study predicted that such systems will soon become mainstream. “The rear autobrake, the sensors, the cameras are going to prevent a lot of property damage crashes,” he said, adding that the proliferation of the technology might also save lives.

As the IIHS findings will influence the design of vehicles at many OEMs, it is likely that vehicles with RAB systems will soon become the industry standard – in dealerships and on shop floors.

While Cadillac has yet to comment on the findings, Subaru – which often highlights its vehicles’ safety  standards, was quick to release a press statement about the findings. “Safety is a top priority in every vehicle we design and build,” said Subaru Canada CEO Yasushi Enami. “Features like reverse automatic braking is just one example of the many steps we take to ensure that Subaru meets increasing safety standards, now and in the future.”
