Toronto, Ontario — June 20, 2018 — While U.S.-German governmental relations may be at their lowest ebb in decades, relations between two of their most iconic OEMs appear to be at an all-time high. Ford and Volkswagen in the early stages of talks to work together on a new range of vans.
According statements released by both automotive behemoths, the companies are “exploring a strategic alliance” designed to help keep both companies competitive. While very little else is known, the companies have said that any deal would not involve a formal merger.
The move comes just six months after VW announced it had struck a similar deal with Toyota to produce trucks.
Not just a recent phenomenon, collaboration between OEMs in different parts of the world began in the late 1960s when Fiat crossed the Iron Curtain to help the Soviet Union’s state-owned automaker produce a number of vehicles.
