Toronto, Ontario — March 20, 2019 — Unifor officials are back negotiating with General Motors.
The Canadian trade union met with the manufacturer Tuesday to discuss ways to preserve jobs in Oshawa.
“I am much more confident today than I was a month ago that together we will find a resolution,” said Unifor president Jerry Dias. “While some of our members qualify for retirement, others need ongoing good paying jobs to support their families. We are committed to working with GM to find solutions for both.”
Unifor began constructive negotiations with GM on February 25, 2019.
The trade union is working to transition talks to examining the potential of transforming operations to allow a base level of hourly employment.
Both organizations have agreed to resume talks over the next few weeks.
As a result of GM’s willingness to talk Unifor has since suspended their multi-media campaign aimed at persuading the automaker to reverse its decision to close the Oshawa Assembly Plant.
