Richmond, Ontario — Richmond, British Columbia RCMP arrested two men in mid-May under the suspicion that they were linked to a series of car thefts in the Steveston area.

The B.C. city’s RCMP detachment received 29 reports of auto theft in April alone. Since then, many vehicles in the Steveson area had their contents stolen. In cases where the thieves found the garage remote, property like bikes and tools were be stolen as well.

“For criminals, finding an unlocked door is akin to pulling on a slot machine handle and coming up with a match,” wrote the Richmond RCMP in a news release.

“If a criminal obtains your garage door remote, it is synonymous with leaving your house keys under the welcome mat.”
