Michigan, United States — A woman in Midland, Michigan, U.S., claims the back window of her SUV was blown out due to extreme temperatures in the state. An auto glass expert corroborated the claims, which were initially put forward by a police officer attending to the driver during the incident.
The woman was driving home when she heard a loud bang, she told a local news station. She originally thought the sound was a gunshot.
“[Then] I was thinking that something fell from the trees, or a rock got thrown, or something, and then came back here and got the police to come out and look at it just to make sure everything was normal. And the officer said that, ‘Yeah it’s a classic case of just being too cold and the window exploded,‘” she added.
When Midland, Mich., news outlet TV5 reached out to a local auto expert, they explained the inside of a vehicle is pressurized and a major difference in indoor temperature versus outdoor temperature can put stress on a car’s tempered windows. When the stress is too great, the window glass collapses.
As of Wednesday, temperatures in Michigan were -11 Celsius.
