Ottawa, Ontario — The Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is expecting an increase in insurance claims following a severe storm that swept across Ontario and Québec on Saturday.
The deadly storm left more than 479,000 people without power and, as of Tuesday morning, more than 150,000 customers across several regions were still without electricity.
As of Tuesday afternoon, regions awaiting power restoration include: Uxbridge, Ont., Peterborough, Ont., Newmarket, Ont., Ottawa, Ont., Lanaudière, Qué., the Outaouais, Qué. and the Laurentians, Qué.
“Depending on where you’re located and the severity of damage affecting you, it still may be a few more days before you have power,” said Hydro One representative Tiziana Baccega Rosa.
Certain collision centres in affected regions have been forced to close in recent days as they await power restoration.
While the IBC says it is too early to project insurance claim tallies, severe weather caused $2.1 billion in insured damage last year, largely driven by fall flooding in British Columbia and summer hailstorms in Calgary.
