Detroit, Michigan — Ford has issued a recall on certain 2021 F-150 pickup trucks, saying the models may unexpectedly shift to neutral while the vehicle is in motion.
The automaker said the problem is due to an error in the transmission software. If the problem occurs, drivers may notice a loss of vehicle power, illuminated dash lights and, once stopped, the vehicle may automatically shift into park.
Ford said it witnessed an increase in “transmission fluid pressure low” DTC P0868 codes set on specific 2021 F-150 pickups equipped with 3.5L GTDI, 2.7L and 5.0L engines and 10R80 transmissions. Its engineering team found one of the powertrain diagnostic logic software branches was turned on in error when the trucks were built.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said there have been 28 warranty claims, one customer complaint to Ford and one complaint to (NHTSA). There have been related crashes or injuries.
Affected models were built between July 28, 2021, and Dec. 20, 2021. Ford said it will begin contacting owners of affected vehicles May 2.
