Victoria, British Columbia – In a further development to the drama surrounding ICBC’s pandemic savings and it’s promise for rebates, Liberal critics to the NDP government are worried that those most deserving of the savings may miss out on a bulk of the money, according to the rebate model unveiled earlier this month.
In a more detailed breakdown of the rebate model, presented by ICBC to CHEK news in Victoria, it was shown that based on it’s parameters drivers with worse driving records can expect to receive the highest amounts in rebates.
This is due to the fact that rebate is based on 19 percent of the rate paid by the customer. Therefore, customers who have been in more accidents and pay a higher rate will receive a higher percentage of their payment back, in the form of the rebate.
BC’s Solicitor General Mike Farnworth said that “This COVID rebate is not meant to influence driving behaviour during the pandemic, we simply believe returning these savings to drivers is the right thing to do.”
Opposition Liberals fired back, saying they felt that the details of the plan were buried by the NDP.
“The public may have been misled thinking we had $190 coming back to us,” said Opposition Liberal critic Mike Morris.
“It does appear the high-risk drivers are getting a benefit over the average everyday driver on the road.”
Owners of ultra-luxury vehicles are also set to receive more sizable rebate cheques than the average driver, due to the more expensive insurance rates paid by luxury vehicle owners.
