Toronto, Ontario — May 29, 2019 — The 25th Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) launched Monday evening in the Halifax Exhibition Centre.
This years opening ceremony theme, “Think Outside the Chair!” highlights the importance of exploring talents in the trades and according to SCNC’s website, encourages students and young apprentices to go into more hands-on and trade oriented fields of work.
Students who participate in competitions this year will compete under six different sectors of trade; construction, employment, information technology, manufacturing and engineering, services, and transportation.
The competition has attracted more than 550 competitors, alongside industry leaders, educators and special guests.
It is estimated that more than 7500 visitors will come to SNCN within the next few days.
“Awesome to have @Skills_Canada National Competition in Halifax this week,” tweeted Halifax Mayor Mike Savage. “A huge event with so much energy and talent in #skilledtrades on display”.
Alongside watching students participate in competitions, visitors were also able to participate in activities such as “Try a Trade” that began at 8:30 a.m today as well as trade and tech exhibitions in the Career Zone.
When it comes to the successes of all the Canadian competitors, SCNC staff report that winners will be announced Thursday afternoon at a private event. Industry training advocate, Sean Slaven had the opportunity to attend the closing ceremony two years ago at a SCNC event in Winnipeg.
“The energy, excitement and the pride on display took my breath away,” Slaven told Collision Repair. “It was sort of like a small Olympics. All I could say was “wow.”
