Skilled Statistics: Canadians consider auto repair fifth most valuable trade career, says recent Leger survey

Toronto, Ontario — A recent Leger survey commissioned by Classic Fire + Life Safety to evaluate Canadian attitudes toward the skilled trades indicates that for citizens, automotive repair is the fifth most valuable trade for a career.

The study—“Measuring up the Trades”—specifically surveyed 1,626 Canadians aged 18 years or older from September 27 to 29, 2024.

Here, data reveals that while 40 percent of citizens have considered a career in the trades, only 13 percent currently work in the field. Additionally, 52 percent of citizens also hold a more positive view of the trades than they did a few years ago, with 80 percent of respondents reporting that there are now more opportunities available in these fields.

When looking at specific trades, while electrical, construction and plumbing are highlighted as the most valuable trades for a career, respondents feel that automotive repair makes the top five, falling under carpentry by one percent at 41 percent.

For Leger, “the findings suggest that traditional stereotypes around trades careers are fading, with 42 percent of respondents saying they would choose a skilled trade if given the chance to start over, and 78 percent saying they would encourage their children to explore these career paths.”
