Shifting Gears: Nearly half Gen Z drivers report driving more than five years ago, says Enterprise Mobility Survey

Toronto, Ontario — Nearly half of Gen Z drivers and 41 percent of driving millennials report that they drive more than they did five years ago, according to a recent Enterprise Mobility Survey.

Some Gen X and baby boomer drivers reported they, too, are driving more, with 33 percent and 16 percent saying they get out on the road more than they did five years ago, respectively. Overall, 1 in 3 drivers surveyed said they drive more today than they did five years ago.

Enterprise suggests this could be tied to feelings of freedom, as 85 percent of its survey respondents indicated owning their own form of transportation provides personal freedom. Further, the majority—66 percent—agreed that these feelings of personal freedom tied to using their car will only increase in the next ten years.

Enterprise Mobility’s survey results also reveal that 41 percent of current drivers are excited about autonomous vehicle technology, as it could “make travel easier for people who can’t or won’t drive” and because it “gives people the time to do other things in a car besides driving.” Conversely, 64 percent of survey respondents said they are skeptical about autonomous vehicles.

When it comes to zero-emissions technologies, four in ten respondents indicated they would consider driving a fully electric car in the future—primarily due to cost savings (44 percent) and a positive environmental impact (34 percent).

On the other hand, 68 percent (or 7 in 10) of respondents believe that the current EV infrastructure is lacking and not yet in a place to support widespread EV adoption.
