Scarborough vehicle fires could be linked to tow truck turf war

By CRM staff

Toronto, Ontario – June 11, 2019 – The series of vehicle fires in Scarborough, Ont. last week could be linked to an ongoing turf war involving towing companies, sources have told CP24.

Last Thursday Toronto police were dispatched to a driveway at Long Cresent and Glen Ames where a vehicle was on fire in a driveway. The fire ended up spreading to another but was put out shortly by the crew.

No less than an hour later the fire department received another call at a nearby auto body shop near the intersection of Sinnott and Sherry road. Two vehicles were reported to be on fire and by the time the fire department arrived, the fire had spread to a third vehicle. According to CP24 this lot is also used by several towing companies.

About 45 minutes later, another call came through at a parking lot of a highrise, claiming that a Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) tow truck was on fire.

“We did find evidence of an accelerant at the scene,” Toronto Fire Capt. David Eckerman told Collision Repair.  “And as we were responding there was a vehicle in the area speeding, which we don’t know at this time if the vehicle was related to the incident or not.”

Police continue to investigate the possibility that these fires may be linked.

Sources have told CP24 that they have their suspicion that this could be the result of a tow truck turf war in Scarborough. There has also been other suspicious activities related to tow truck drivers including the murder of one outside his home in Scarborough in April and another in January. Sources have also told CP24 that these victims were associated with the lot where the autobody shop fire occurred.
