Toronto, Ontario – Safety Shield 360 technology is set to become standard on 11 Nissan models starting in 2021, according to Nissan Canada.
Comprised of six technologies in one; automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, high-beam assist, lane-departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking and blind-spot warning—the Safety Shield 360 was shown, in a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, to help reduce injuries often caused by backing and front-to-rear crashes.
“Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 can help drivers of all ages,” said senior manager of technology and research for Nissan, Andy Christensen, in a press release. “It’s like having an extra set of eyes that can see 360 degrees around the car and provide active driver assistance, crash avoidance and pedestrian detection.”
He continued, “This added layer of protection can help keep young drivers safe especially as they are getting used to being on busy roads.”
Advanced driver assistance technology included in Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 can help to reduce crashes, which may be attributable to driver inexperience. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety1, vehicles equipped with Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking experience a 56 percent reduction in crashes with injuries. IIHS also reports that back-up crashes went down by 78 percent in vehicles equipped with Rear Automatic Braking and by 22 percent in vehicles with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
Safety Shield 360 technology is already standard on the 2020 Sentra, Leaf, Maxima, Qashqai, Kicks and Titan in Canada and will be standard on the 2021 Rogue. More models equipped with the technology will be announced in coming months.
