Toronto, Ontario — With Canada Day here and the long weekend quickly approaching, most people are eager to soak up the warm weather and enjoy the weekend’s festivities with family and friends. Although, this time evokes joyful memories for many, the past tells us that this weekend isn’t all sunshine and daisies.
In 2019, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) revealed that over the course of the Canada Day weekend there were nine deaths and nearly 9,000 charges issued across Ontario.
To prevent unnecessary tragedies this year, the OPP launched a summer traffic campaign for Canada Day, starting summer traffic campaign on June 27 ending on July 5, 2020.
The OPP will be focussing on tackling aggressive driving, along with other ‘Big Four’ offences, which include: impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving and lack of occupant restraint.
“These high-risk behaviours continue to be contributing factors in many preventable tragedies,” says the OPP.
Should you observe a suspected impaired driver, please call 911 or contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
Please drive carefully and enjoy your planned activities by arriving at your destination safely, says the OPP.
