Winnipeg, Manitoba —Bigger is better–except when it comes to insurance claims.
According to Manitoba Public Insurance, there were 871 pothole claims this April. This is a 1,200 percent increase, compared to the monthly average of 64.
This beats the previous 479 percent increase in March 2022, compared to 2021.
The city has received 3,323 pothole repair requests and repaired more than 33,000 this year alone, according to a report by CTV News Winnipeg.
In the report, Dr. Ahmed Shalaby, a civil engineering professor said “Designs that were installed or constructed 40 or 50 years ago were never designed for the level of traffic (or) the type of environment we have today. Climate change is adding to that rate of deterioration, accelerating it significantly.”
