St. Catharines, Ontario – A man was found sleeping in a self-driving Tesla, blitzing down the Queen Elizabeth Way near St. Catharines, Ont. at more than 100km/h.
In a video by one Instagram user, Louise Lesser captured a video of a man in a reclined driver’s seat, apparently sound asleep and completely unaware of his surroundings. She said in an interview with CP24 that she and her partner considered honking the driver awake, but worried that startling him might cause an accident instead.
While some berated Lesser for filming him, more insightful commenters pointed out how cabin cameras in the Tesla should have prevented the man from his negligent use of autopilot.
Given that Tesla’s autopilot and Full-Self Driving beta require drivers to grip the steering wheel, commenter Jackson Payne speculates that the driver may have tricked the system using something to ‘grip’ the wheel.
