Ottawa, Ontario — The Federal Government and Transport Canada are asking the public for their solutions to the nation’s auto theft problem via an online public government survey.
In collaboration with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), the online public survey is open until 2:00 p.m. ET on September 25, 2024.
According to a public statement made by the Government of Canada, the “challenge”–as it is referred to in official documents—is specifically “looking to encourage Canadian innovators to develop new and novel (or a significant enhancement to an existing electrical or electromechanical innovation), low cost and effective solutions to help deter and prevent the most frequent causes of vehicle theft, i.e., relay attacks, key programming (immobilizer programming) and opportunistic key code ‘grabbing.’”
Furthermore, as part of the challenge, the proposed solution must:
- Operate for cars, SUVs and trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating under 10,000 pounds
- Increase prevention and protection against vehicle theft and could be an electrical or electromechanical product, a service or a system
- Demonstrate the potential to be commercially viable
- Be affordable
- Operate in a wide range of Canadian weather conditions and geographical locations
- Be aftermarket and easy to install
- Be safe
