Proposed Canadian EV incentives exclude Tesla vehicles

By CRM Staff

Toronto, Ontario – March 27, 2019 –Canada’s proposed carbon-free incentives won’t include Tesla vehicles.

The pending federal budget includes a $5,000 incentive for the purchase of an electric battery or hydrogen fuel vehicle as a part of a three-year, $300 million investment encouraging the use of carbon-free vehicles. Unfortunately, Canadians looking at purchasing a Tesla vehicle won’t be eligible for the rebate.

The incentives will only apply to vehicles with a retail price of less than $45,000. The cheapest Tesla currently available in Canada is the Standard Range Model 3, which retails for $47,600. With Tesla’s entire product line being excluded from the proposed incentive, Canadians will need to look towards cheaper alternatives if they wish to receive a discount.

Also included in the proposed federal budget is a tax write-off for EVs for the year they are put in use, a new EVSE investment of $130 million over five years, and a program to encourage automakers to meet “voluntary zero-emission vehicle sales targets,” as reported by Electrek.
