Waterloo, Ontario — Researchers from Nissan and Kitchener, Ont.-based Acerta Analytic Solutions are working on a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool which predicts engine component failure, using data from the vehicle’s electronic control unit and its own machine learning algorithm.
According to Automotive News Canada, this tool is the result of a $1.4 million partnership between Acerta and Nissan’s research division, representing component failure probability in an easily read layout: if the line goes above the threshold, the engine isn’t acting normally. Repair it, or the likelihood of an on-road failure grows.
Kazuhiro Doi, vice president of Nissan’s research division adds that predictive analytics may become a standard part of the Nissan service package, preventing on-road failures before they occur.
While the current system is limited to fuel injector analysis, there are plans to expand its use to internal combustion engine power trains, electric vehicle components, and most importantly for collision repairers, cameras in advanced driver assistance systems.
