Toronto, Ontario — Save money on hydraulics and take a trip down to Barton Street instead—CAA South Central Ontario’s 2022 worst roads list has been released.
From the heavily-trafficked arteries of Toronto, Hamilton and Ottawa’s downtown cores to the county roads of Eastern Ontario, CAASCO has yet again compiled a driver-sourced list of the province’s most precarious roads and has named Hamilton’s Barton Street East as this year’s worst.
Barton Street, much to the chagrin of Hamiltonians, has been steadily climbing up CAA’s list of shame over the past several years, finishing at fifth place in 2019 and third in 2021.
In fairness to the steel city, Barton Street is Hamilton’s longest street and likely one of the most heavily trafficked in the entire region.
Similarly, the second place road, Eglinton Avenue West in Toronto, is also another extremely busy section of road that used to connect all six former boroughs of the city.
Perhaps more notably, Prince Edward County, east of Belleville, earned itself back-to-back spots in third and fourth place for Barker Street in Picton and County Road 49—an absolute rollercoaster of a country road along an otherwise picturesque route.
Various other heavily-trafficked areas in Toronto, Ottawa and Kingston closed out this year’s list.
CAA says that its goal with this list is not to stoke outrage or shaming, but to both alert drivers to unsafe roads and pressure governments of all levels to promote efforts toward safer infrastructure.
“People vote in the annual CAA Worst Roads Campaign because it gives Ontarians a platform to continue putting pressure on various levels of government to understand what roads they believe are in urgent need of repair,” said Teresa Di Felice, assistant v-p of government and community relations for CAASCO.
