Pocket Passenger: Aviva unveils driving performance premium model for young drivers

Toronto, Ontario — A new insurance policy plan aimed at young drivers has Aviva hoping it can drill some safe driving habits, while offering opportunities for savings, with the recent launch of Quotemehappy Connect.

With what the company is calling a “new app-based car insurance proposition,” Aviva is offering customers aged between 17 and 29 a chance to take part in this new premium adjustment model where drivers will receive weekly grades on their driving performance.

Through the use of a small windshield-mounted device, Aviva can issue drivers with red, amber, green or gold ratings for their weekly driving performance, with green and gold-rated drivers eligible to collect reward points that can be redeemed for e-vouchers.

Aviva’s press release from Monday said that the app will let drivers to review their driving rating immediately after a trip, allowing for real-time adjustment of driving habits.

As well, the company says that all renewal prices are personalized to the individual driver, with the safest gold-rated drivers being able to earn up to 30 percent off of their renewal premium.

The app records speed, smoothness (including braking, cornering and accelerating), usage (time and frequency of journeys), and distraction (mobile phone use).

Aviva’s head of connected motors, Matthew Washer, said “Many young people want to demonstrate they are safe drivers, and the app allows them to do this in a simple and easy way by working in the background every time they drive.

“With the squeeze on household budgets set to rise further, motorists will be looking for ways to reduce the cost of their car insurance. Quotemehappy Connect allows young drivers to stay safe on the roads whilst helping to keep their insurance costs low with a price that is individual to them, rather than ‘people like them.’”

As this news was originally published by Aviva’s UK division, Collision Repair has reached out to confirm whether this policy will be made available to Canadian customers.
