Prince George, British Columbia – Thousands of B.C. drivers have been fined for illegible license plates, with one driver facing a $230 fine for his peeling plate.
In an interview with the Prince George Citizen, the driver in question, Dave Muirhead, said that his plates probably dates back to 2004. Since then, a quarter of its laminate peeled off, leaving the plate in violation of provincial legislation.
Muirhead is far from the only one with plate issues though. B.C. plates manufactured between 2007 to 2012 were particularly vulnerable to delamination, with other Canadian provinces and even American states facing similar peeling problems in recent years.
Under section 3.03 of B.C.’s Motor Vehicle Act, number plates must be legible enough to be accurately photographed by speed monitoring devices and traffic light safety devices. While free replacement plates are available to Insurance Corporation of British Columbia, drivers who fail to replace damaged, lost or stolen plates are subject to fines up to $500.
“I’m a little worried about it, if there’s a fine,” said Muirhead
