Quebec City, Quebec — The Counseil D’Experts Sur Les Contributions D’Assurance Automobile has announced that an expert panel on Quebec auto insurance has welcomed a recommendation to introduce four new, streamlined insurance categories for commercial vehicles in the province.
In a recent press release, the Counseil specifically notes that “after reviewing the approach taken by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Quebec (SAAQ) to determine insurance contributions, (…) the panel of experts welcomes the SAAQ’s efforts to refine its method of calculating the insurance contributions for commercial vehicles so that their rates reflect the risk represented by each insured vehicle category as accurately as possible.”
Specifically, one proposal that the report highlights is the introduction of four new categories of commercial vehicles. The commercial vehicle category comprises 18 distinct categories for more than 1.1 million vehicles. The proposal would thus split the existing broad categories of vehicles with an F license plate prefix into four more specific categories:
- Passenger vehicle for commercial use
- Motor homes
- Emergency vehicles
- Other commercial vehicles with an F prefix
Each new category will have a tailored insurance contribution, reflecting the specific risk profiles attributed to each category.
According to the press release, this reclassification aims to ensure each vehicle type pays a rate proportional to the risk it presents.
