Pandemic Pick-Ups: Employment in automotive repair and parts sectors now above pre-pandemic levels, says DesRosier report

Toronto, Ontario — According to statistics from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, Canadian employment in automotive repair facilities and auto parts stores has now risen above 2019’s pre-pandemic levels.

When looking specifically at the Canadian Automotive Employment percentage change from December 2019 to December 2023, the automotive repair and maintenance sectors are up 4.8 percent above pandemic employment levels.

“Employment in the automotive repair and maintenance sector has reached 121,000 employees in December 2023, exceeding its 2019 levels,” said DesRosier. “Similarly, automotive parts and accessories stores (also) saw employment increase 4.9 percent above pre-pandemic levels.”

However, not all automotive sectors are experiencing an increase and when compared to automotive repair and parts, automotive manufacturing remains behind—a total of 11 percent behind 2019 levels.

DesRosier also noted that employment in the overall broader auto sector increased throughout 2023. By December of that year, there were 604,000 recorded employees and levels were nearly at the pre-pandemic baseline.
