Toronto, Ontario — October 4, 2018 — Ontario tire collectors are to register by the end of the month with a new regulatory group, the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority.
The Ontario Tires Stewardship (OTS) program will be no more come December 31, 2018, with the RPRA taking over as the new regulatory group.
Until the new year the tire regulations will fall under the Wind-Up Plan produced by the OTS. The plan outlines how collection and recycling of used tires will continue until the new year to ensure continuous convenience for consumers.
The new regulations being put in place are to model a circular economy that achieves a waste-free future.
Tire producers will also be directly responsible for ensuring that tires are collected from Ontario residents and businesses.
According to another news outlet the RPRA had said they will function differently from the OTS program, which had managed millions of dollars in feed, spending the bulk on tire disposal costs.
The purpose of this new program is to regulate the marketplace.
Here are a list of the following dates to watch out for during this changeover:
- Service providers including tire collectors, haulers, retreaders and processors, must register with the Authority with no fee by October 31, 2018.
- Producers or Producers Responsibility Organization must report the collection sites in their system, the tire haulers, retreaders and processors in their tire collection or management by November 15, 2018.
