Toronto, Ontario — Ontario Premier, Doug Ford has warned the Trump Administration to rethink imposing new tariffs on aluminum.
Since June, numerous reports have been circulating suggesting Washington is considering reimposing tariffs on aluminum.
“Economically, we’re going to war,” Ford said during Friday’s daily COVID-19 news briefing.
“We may be small[er], but we’re your number one customer, remember that … don’t forget that,” Ford warned U.S. President Donald Trump.
The threat of reimposed tariffs comes just a week after Canada, the United States and Mexico signed off on a new free trade deal.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also expressed concern about the potential threat of aluminum tariffs.
“This is something that again is a little difficult to understand because the United States relies heavily on imports of Canadian aluminum,” Trudeau said on Wednesday.
Trudeau also told reporters during a press conference that he had spoken to President Donald Trump earlier that day, where he urged him to reconsider the aluminum tariffs.
“I highlighted to the president that the pandemic has disrupted usual manufacturing processes and supply chains, and that has caused certain disruption in the aluminum sector that is starting to realign itself, given the economies are starting up again and manufacturing is getting going,” Trudeau told reporters after a call with Trump.
