Saskatoon, Saskatchewan — The Saskatchewan automotive skilled trades community showed up in force in late April for the 2023 SkillsCanada Saskatchewan Provincial Competition, held mainly at SaskPolytech’s Saskatoon Idylwyld campus.
The prolific trades school itself saw 29 of its own students win medals at this year’s competition, in addition to talented young tradespeople from institutions across the province.
Amara Davidson of Albert E. Peacock Collegiate came away as the gold medal winner of the autobody repair competition, in the secondary school category. The runners up were Zeke Jasan-Lowe, also of Albert E. Peacock Collegiate, and Dylan Hogg of Swift Current Comprehensive, earning silver and bronze medals respectively.
Concerning post-secondary autobody repairers, as the sole technician to compete in the category this year, Donavon Blackwell of SaskPolytech has automatically advanced to represent the province at the national competition in Winnipeg next week.
The car painting competition featured a pair of duels between talented young automotive refinishers, with Skyler Harding of Swift Current Comprehensive beating out Joel Runzer of Albert E. Peacock Collegiate to win the gold.
On the post-secondary end, Joshua Benham faced off against fellow SaskPolytech student Jaskaran Singh Doel and ultimately prevailed, securing for himself a gold medal.
The SkillsCanada National Competition is set to kick off on Wednesday in Winnipeg.
