Toronto, Ontario — January 22, 2019 –- Kingston, Ontario will become the home of two new electric vehicle fast-charging stations slated to be installed in the city’s downtown core. News of the $100,000 investment was announced Friday by Mark Gerretsen, a member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, on behalf of Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources.
“The move to electric vehicles is an integral part of our move toward a clean energy future. Our government is proud to invest in EV fast-charging stations in Kingston that will provide cleaner transportation options for its residents and visitors,” said Gerretsen.
The chargers, which are partially funded through Natural Resources Canada Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Development Initiative, will be among the first Level 3 fast chargers in the city.
The funding given to the city of Kingston is part of the government’s $182.5 million investment to develop a coast-to-coast charging network for EVs and establish natural gas stations along key freight corridors and hydrogen stations in metropolitan centres. The investment will also be instrumental in ensuring the Canada-US alignment of regulations for low-carbon vehicles and refueling infrastructure.
“We’ve made significant investments in electric vehicle charging stations in an effort to reduce our community’s carbon footprint,” said Bryan Paterson, Kingston Mayor. “That’s why I’m pleased that the federal government is investing in two fast chargers in downtown Kingston. This will help us reach our ambitious clean energy goals even faster.”
