Ottawa, Ontario — The Ontario government’s Provincial Emergency Management Strategy and Action Plan has received a thumbs up from the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), which it applauds for keeping Ontarians safe when disasters strike.
According to a provincial government press release, this provides a structured set of goals and actions to keep Ontario in a state of constant preparedness against natural disasters, pandemics, cyber security threats and other provincial emergencies that may arise.
“The sharp rise in emergency events across Canada and devastating financial costs of disaster response and recovery…is estimated at over $10 billion annually,” said Bernie Derible, deputy minister at the Commissioner Emergency Management.
In addition to coordinating emergency responses across several municipalities, this includes the provision of financial assistance, repairing buildings and environmental restoration.
“Over the past 15 years, insurance claims from severe weather and natural disasters have more than quadrupled,” said Kim Donaldson, v-p of Ontario at IBC.
“On behalf of Canada’s property and casualty insurers, I congratulate the Government of Ontario on this important announcement to strengthen public safety in Ontario.”
