Hamilton, Ontario — McMaster University is getting a $10 million FedDev Ontario investment to go towards an automotive, aerospace and advanced manufacturing network called iHub.
iHub will be added onto the facility at McMaster Innovation Park and will be getting another $16.8 million from transportation manufacturers like Ford, Honda, Bombardier, Stellantis and a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries by the name of MHI – RJ Aviation Group. The new addition will also be putting a special focus on clean energy as the industry shifts to electric vehicles.
McMaster President, David Farrar, says that iHub will bring many new opportunities and provide a way to bounce back from the economic downfall that resulted from the pandemic.
“We’re grateful for the opportunity to advance our work with Canadian manufacturers in automotive and aerospace electrification,” he said. “This investment will enable economic recovery by connecting our manufacturers and SMEs, providing training and access to technology, and commercializing new products.” (SOURCE McMaster University)
iHub will bring 170 local jobs to Hamilton and the Honourable Filomena Tassi, the Minister of Labour and MP for Hamilton West-Ancaster Dundas, says that these new jobs will help Canadian innovators thrive in the automotive and aerospace industries.
“iHub will position Hamilton as a global destination for electric automotive and aerospace technologies, while providing direct industry training for at least 200 highly qualified personnel to ensure that our workforce is at the forefront of these technologies for years to come,” said Tassi.
