Toronto, Ontario — May 23, 2019 — After three drivers were injured by the unexpected deployment of airbags in 2019 CR-Vs, the Japanese OEM announced that it would be recalling almost 140,000 North American vehicles, including close to 20,000 sold in Canada. Unusually for Honda, which has been troubled by recalls connected to Takata airbags since 2013, the problematic airbags involved in this recall were not produced by Takata.
Since 2013, Honda has ordered recalls replacing more than 20 million Takata airbags used in its vehicles. In March, the OEM issued a recall of about a million vehicles to replace the Takata airbags–ones which had themselves been installed as replacements in earlier recalls.
At the height of its success, Takata manufactured one-in-five of the world’s airbags. More than a dozen people have been recorded as being killed by defective Takata airbags, which occasionally cast shrapnel when they deploy. Since 2013, close to four million vehicles have been recalled due to concerns related to these safety concerns.
