Debert, Nova Scotia — Maritime Auto Parts is celebrating a very special anniversary this year as the company marks 90 years in operation.
Maritime Auto Parts first opened its doors in 1932–smack in the middle of the Great Depression. The business was owned, at that time, by Ray Fillmore, who sold an array of Model Ts, Model As, Studebakers and Packards.
Today, Maritime Auto Parts is owned and operated by second-generation owner Andrew MacDonald, who took over from his father Ed MacDonald.
Canadian Auto Recycler checked in with Andrew this month to see how 2022 has been treating him–and how celebrations have been going, of course.
Canadian Auto Recycler: How has employment/availability of skilled staff changed over your time in the industry?
Andrew MacDonald: Now more than ever we see the need for strong, skilled, and talented staff.
There has been a shift in recent years as well with the necessity for businesses and leaders to be flexible, open-minded and forward-thinking. Trusting and empowering your employees and getting away from more rigid and dated ways of doing business is what’s going to attract the right people to join your team, and we have a great team here at Maritime Auto.
CAR: How has the market changed following the pandemic?
AM: Purchasing cars is more competitive and strategic than it’s ever been before. When bidding for cars, you’re up against people all over the world. It’s become a data-driven industry, and you must use that data to drive your purchase decisions and understand the margins of each vehicle.
CAR: What are you focussing on, regarding the future of Maritime Auto?
AM: Simply put, more cars.
Maritime Auto simply wants to continue bringing more recycled parts to the consumer. In 2015 we purchased our Pick a Part in Cow Bay which was another way for us to purchase more vehicles, and different types of vehicles, all while bringing more recycled and affordable parts into the hands of happy customers.
As we move forward, strengthen our brand, and grow our inventory we also stay attuned to the ever-growing and evolving world of electric vehicles.
CAR: How does it feel to be celebrating the business’ 90th anniversary?
AM: Reflecting on 90 years is a lot of fun! That’s many, many of years of change, hard work, successes, failures, and pushing forward—what history we’ve built here at Maritime Auto. I couldn’t be prouder of the people behind it all. Our team here is what makes it all happen and who allows us to continue growing and leading in the Auto Recycling industry.
