Richmond Hill, Ontario — With many automakers coming forward with bold, long-term environmental commitments for their products, the world of sustainable design continues to become increasingly more entwined with the automotive industry as Volvo Cars Canada and the Interior Design Show (IDS) Toronto announce that Montreal-based Tiam Maeiyat is the winner of The New Garage challenge.
For top prize, Maeiyat and his design, “Parking-Parc”, will receive a $2,500 cash prize, promotion in House & Home and Maison et Demeure and a showcase at the 2021 Toronto IDS.
According to the press release, Maeiyat’s design “upcycles the garage space into a new form of the family room. Linking inside and outside together with light and transparency, the design creates possibilities for quality family time, regardless of time or season.”
Maeiyat himself said, “I believe that freedom in form results in freedom in the way we live in the space. This freedom brings more opportunity, more attachments and more sense of belonging.”
Launched at the end of October, The New Garage challenge called on designers to create a concept for an innovative and sustainable garage that also complimented the design of the XC40 Recharge, Volvo’s first pure electric compact SUV.
