Grand Opening: Volkswagen recalls ID.4 electric SUV for doors unlocking on the move

Toronto, Ontario — Volkswagen AG has ordered dealers in the United States and Canada to cease all sales of the ID.4 electric SUV, citing doors that may open while driving and that the OEM has no fixes available quite yet.

According to a stop-sale notice by the OEM, this affects 1,455 Canadian vehicles and 16,207 US vehicles built at the Volkswagen Chattanooga Assembly Plant in Tennessee. Ten affected models were identified at the Chattanooga plant itself, Bloomberg reported.

Volkswagen has found that the malfunctioning door handles may allow water to seep in and compromise the door’s electronics near the door handle.

While a stop-sale notice and recall has been posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, no recalls or notices have been released by Transport Canada at the time of publication.

Customers can identify the issue by listening for a clicking sound similar to the car’s locking and unlocking sound.
