Toronto, Ontario — May 14, 2014 — Google appears to be working on a new app for its Pixel line of smartphones, one with a crash detection function. Called Safety Hub, the app has only been seen in code form, and details about the auto-related app are not yet public knowledge.
The news, first reported by a tech blog, XDA Developers, comes from a string of code in the beta platform of the ‘Q’ version of the Android operating system.
While little is known about how a mobile device would interface with the vehicle, or, indeed, what Google would do with a collision alert, it seems likely the device would, at least, be capable of locating authorities and providing GPS data.
It is clear that Google sees great potential in investing in the auto sector. The company developed an autonomous vehicle subsidiary in 2016.
