Toronto, Ontario — Volkswagen is pulling more options away from Canadian showrooms as the Golf lineup is pared back to only the essential models.
The 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder TSI engine first became available in 2019, but will stick around until 2022 in the Golf models, according to a report by Automotive News Canada. It will still be available in the Jetta.
“We’d like it, but the U.S. doesn’t want it, and in the current economic climate, we can no longer make the business case to bring the vehicle over solely for the Canadian market,” said VW Canada spokesperson Thomas Tetzlaff.
The decision does not seem to be driven by lack of sales, said Tetzlaff. He said demand remains steady, but the automakers only have enough units to tide them over in 2020, and inventory is “already tight on all of these models,” said Tetzlaff.
The eighth-generation Golf lineup in Canada will feature the all-new 2022 GTI, as well as the Golf R due to arrive in 2021. When SportWagen and Golf Alltrack met ends, Tetzlaff said dealerships also stocked up on those before their demise as well.
2020 is also the final year for the eGolf. Instead of offering the electric hatch, Volkswagen will reportedly instead move customers towards its new ID.4 hatchback.
