Toronto, Ontario – April 4, 2019 – General Motors is launching a new ad campaign focused around reminding buyers of OnStar Stolen Vehicle Assistance services.
In late-March, a high-speed chase was avoided thanks to the statuette technology and its ability to slow a vehicle to approximately 10 kilometres per hour. It wasn’t the first time the safety system has been used to apprehend a car thief and it won’t be the last.
Charlene Poranganel, assistant manager for global emergency services outreach at GM Canada told CBC News that OnStar Stolen Vehicle Services are used up to 60 times a month in Canada.
“On average, a vehicle is stolen every seven minutes in Canada and costs Canadians close to $1 billion every year,” said Mike Speranzini, director of sales and marketing, OnStar in Canada. “The need for safety and security is timeless. OnStar can remotely help police recover our members’ stolen vehicles.”
On top of being able to slow an automobile down, Stolen Vehicle Assistance can use onboard GPS to locate the vehicle and guide police to its whereabouts. Also included is a remote ignition block which stops the car or truck from being restarted following a theft, and theft alarm notifications that send you a text, email, or call if the vehicle alarm goes off after the doors are locked. All these features are a part of the OnStar Safety and Security plan, one in which GM has been equipping vehicles with since 2009.
