Newmarket, Ontario — Come for the car wash, stay for the giveaway of rare stuffed animals, as CARSTAR Newmarket gears up to host its annual charity car wash to support cystic fibrosis research, back Saturday after a three-year COVID-induced hiatus.
Owner and finance director of CARSTAR Newmarket, Romena Deokinandan says she is thrilled to be able to reach back out to the community after such a long time away from this treasured tradition, and is hoping this year’s car wash will be bigger than ever, with her goal set at raising $1,000 for cystic fibrosis research.
“Our store does it annually, but we didn’t get to do it for the past three years, due to COVID. So, this year we have relocated to a larger location and we’ve really been looking forward to boosting this car wash and making it a grand event,” said Deokinandan, over the phone with Collision Repair.
“You can pay $5 to get your car washed. There will be a barbecue going, serving hot dogs and burgers for about $2, but in most cases if people come through and they’re hungry we just give them the food anyway, as long as they donate to the car wash,” she said with a laugh.
Those who come by on Saturday will also have a shot at getting their hands on a piece of Deokinandan’s prized, limited edition CARSTAR plushie collection—think Beanie Babies, but if they had more OEM certifications.
“Around the holidays every year, there is always a CARSTAR plushie that comes out, and it is a different one each year. I have a collection of those that I will be giving away,” she said.
With all that, including games, balloons and music for the kids, and even a raffle, Deokinandan says “Everyone who comes to the car wash will walk away with something.”
Deokinandan expressed that over the years of her witnessing the passion the CARSTAR brand has for this cause, she too has become compelled by the way philanthropy can connect a business with people.
“CARSTAR changed my life, as a franchisee, and my family’s life as well. I’m very touched by all the stories I hear from the kids who are living with this disease and how they manage their lives day-to-day,” she said.
“Because this is our livelihood, it reflects good upon everybody at our franchise, and good is good to do, right?”
CARSTAR Newmarket’s charity car wash is set to run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, at 445 Harry Walker Pky. N. in Newmarket.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
