Toronto, Ontario – Toronto saw nearly 98 millimetres of rain on Tuesday, causing chaos across the city. All southbound lanes of the Don Valley Parkway were closed at Bayview Ave. and Bloor St., as well as northbound at Dundas St. E due to flooding.
Collision Repair magazine checked with six collision centres nearest to the DVP flooding. Of those six, one had experienced damages that affected their business, and another anticipates seven tow-ins by Thursday.
An employee at CARSTAR Toronto Eastern, located just off the DVP, says that their shop had minor flooding.
“We had minor flooding, nothing too serious though. But my texts couldn’t come in, my boss couldn’t come in. That disrupted the whole flow for the shop.”
While Assured Automotive, located on King St. E, did not see any flooding, an employee says that although they didn’t experience any flooding themselves, they are expecting many cars to come in.
“We have received assignments from the insurance providers, and are expecting about seven cars to be towed in for the next 48 hours.”
The floods are reported to have caused approximately $1 billion in damages in the Toronto area, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada. Expert meteorologists warn that this could become a more common occurrence.
“As temperatures continue to rise, you’re going to have more moisture in the system,” Kathryn Bakos, managing director of finance and resilience at the University of Waterloo’s Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation told CBC News. “[We’re] going to have bigger storms, larger precipitation events, with more water coming down over shorter periods of time. Storms are going to come down with even greater force.”
This is a developing story.
