Field Trip: Saputo Capital Collision Group hosts skilled trades summer camp

Guelph, Ontario — Saputo Capital Collision Group hosted a cohort of summer campers this past Thursday for a field trip at the company’s CARSTAR Guelph location.

The Skills Ontario Trades summer camp, put on through Conestoga College and Linamar Corporation, brought two groups of ten campers aged 12 years to 14 years to the CARSTAR Guelph collision facility. The campers received a tour of the state-of-the-art facility before they tried their hands at some collision repair tasks.

“They mapped out a car for previous damage, taking turns on the Spanesi Touch measuring system and prepping the surface of a tonneau cover,” Natasha Woods, VP of Saputo Capital Collision Group, told Collision Repair. “We also walked through the repair process—mapping out, writing the estimates, pre-scan, ordering parts, mirror-matching parts, body prep, paint, reassembly, detail and post-scan.”

“This wasn’t just a tour or little chit-chat about auto body repair—the amazing team at CARSTAR Guelph had our campers examining, evaluating, sanding and using the latest technology in the industry!” said Christopher Cole, Skills Ontario program facilitator.

The CARSTAR Canada marketing team reached out to the Saputo team regarding the opportunity.

“We’re honoured to have worked with our CARSTAR Canada family, Skills Ontario, Conestoga College and Linamar to make this day happen,” said Woods. “It was equally special to show the campers the ins and outs of the collision repair process and see their interest blossom.”

“It was a pleasure to inspire these budding students with the possibilities in the collision repair industry,” said Oghogho Oteju, senior marketing manager for CARSTAR Canada. “We’re proud to contribute to their journey as they explore future career opportunities.”

The Skills Ontario summer camp introduces students in grade 7 through grade 9 to careers in the skilled trades, including welding, truck and coach, automotive service and heavy-duty equipment. Camp workshops are led by Conestoga College faculty and skilled tradespeople. The program was first launched in 2011 and includes 28 camps throughout the province.
