Enterprise fined for misleading advertising

Toronto, Ontario — March 6, 2018 — Canada’s Competition Bureau (CCB) has fined Enterprise Rent-A-Car $1 million after deciding that the company had used misleading advertisements. Enterprise has announced that it would conduct an internal policy review to make sure that future advertisements do not contravene the law.

In a statement to Auto Rental News, vice president of Enterprise Steven Tudela said, “We are cooperating proactively and voluntarily with CCB to enhance the clarity of our advertising and that of our industry overall.”

The offending advertisements were run on apps, in emails and on social media. The CCB says that services were not available for the prices described in advertisements as additional mandatory fees were being added by the company.

John Pecman, commissioner of competition, commended Enterprise for collaborating with the CCB to reach a resolution that ensures truth in advertising. “Consumers will now be able to trust that the prices they see advertised are the ones they will pay, and won’t be surprised by extra fees,” he said.

While Tudula also described the company as committed to transparency regarding prices and industry standards, the investigation found that Enterprise’s unadvertised fees increased prices by up to 48 percent.
