Calgary, Alberta — In a new report, the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) forecasts that the amount of electric vehicles will surge over the next 20 years, putting them at the forefront of the province’s electricity demand.
The company predicts that he amount of EVs in Alberta will increase from a range of 200,000 to two-million, by 2041.
“When it comes to peak load growth, we’re noticing that electric vehicles is going to be the game changer here,” Leo Tovar, an analyst with the AESO during a webinar.
The report found that the growth in electric vehicle sales and use in the province that will translate into approximately 120 Megawatts (MW) of average demand growth and nearly 400 MW of peak demand growth by 2040. Meaning the province may need to prepare, in order to deal with peak demand growth and the potential stress it may have on the electric grid.
