EV/AV Report: Waterproofing the Cybertruck; Loblaws deploys autonomous delivery trucks

Toronto, Ontario — In this weekly electric and autonomous vehicle report, Elon Musk teases some Cybertruck features; Loblaws deploys autonomous grocery trucks in Toronto and Nissan announces pricing for its upcoming EV.

Waterproof…enough?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the Cybertruck is going to be “waterproof enough” to cross rivers and act as a marine craft for short periods.

“Needs to be able to get from Starbase to South Padre Island,” he added, referencing the location of a SpaceX launch site.

That would require the Cybertruck motor to a distance of 360 metres, in water.

Go for groceries

Loblaws has partnered with autonomous vehicle company Gatnik to deploy a half-dozen delivery trucks across the Greater Toronto Area.

The trucks—which operate autonomously with a safety driver sat behind the wheel—will ferry products between Loblaws locations around the GTA. The vehicles are temperature-controlled.

Apparently, the companies completed more than 150,000 trips during the pandemic—without a single safety incident.

With the technology now on Toronto roads, the next step is to fully remove the safety driver from the vehicle.

New for Nissan

Nissan’s impending electric vehicle will qualify for Canada’s federal iZEV rebate; all of the ARIYA’s six variations will be priced below $70,000, making it eligible for the up-to $5,000 discount.

Nissan started taking reservations for its ARIYA vehicle last February. The vehicle will start at $52,998.

The OEM says deliveries for the FWD version will begin in the late fall of this year, with the AWD models to follow in early 2023.
