Light Work: Altair Engineering honours automotive award winners in sustainability, lightweighting and recycling

Troy, Michigan — Information technology company Altair Engineering has released the winners of its tenth annual Enlighten award. These awards honour advancements in sustainability and lightweighting initiatives. Presented in conjunction with the Centre for Automotive Research (CAR), the Enlighten award also recognizes advancements in carbon footprint, water and energy consumption reduction, as well as material reuse/recycling endeavours.

Winners of this year’s awards come from a multitude of organizations and institutions, including Ford, Shiloh Industries, General Motors, Toyota, BASF, Nemak, and McMaster university.

Ford took home awards in two different categories, winning the Sustainable Product category for their 2022 F-150 Lightning. They also won the Sustainable Material category for their implementation of Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) ocean plastics for vehicle parts.

Other category winners include:

  • Sustainable Process: Nemak – Recycled Materials for Sustainable Manufacturing & Product
  • Enabling Technology: Shiloh Industries, General Motors – ShilohCore Acoustic Patch Laminate (APL)
  • Future of Lightweighting: McMaster University and Nemak – NemAlloy™, Novel Lightweight Automotive Aluminum Alloys
  • Module Lightweighting: Winner: BASF Corp., Toyota, and L&L Products – Toyota Tundra Second Row Seat Structure

“The caliber of nominees for this year’s Enlighten Award was unparalleled and is a true testament to the investments the automotive industry is making to reach – and even exceed – global sustainability targets,” said Richard Yen, senior VP of product and strategy at Altair.

“As we celebrate our tenth year… we have seen this award evolve from showcasing vehicle lightweighting initiatives to companies now fully embracing sustainability and the commitment to building a net-zero environment and circular economy.”

President and CEO of CAR Carla Bailo also praised this year’s winners. “The winners of the 2022 Enlighten Award have demonstrated the great strides the automotive industry has made in creating more sustainable products,” said Bailo.

“Collaborating with Altair over the past ten years has allowed us to showcase… the automotive sector’s most unique and proven approaches to meet weight reduction and sustainability goals.”
