Tokyo, Japan — Sony and Honda have formally signed a joint venture agreement, forming Sony Mobility Inc—a company to provide its first electric vehicles and “services for mobility” in 2025.
This signing cements previous informal discussions on the possibility of the entertainment company partnering with the vehicle manufacturer.
The Sony website showcases prototypes of multiple Sony Coupes, but does not indicate when, or if a commercially available vehicle will be sold to the public. According to Jameson Dow at Electrek, details are scarce, and it is still unclear whether the vehicle will be closer to a ‘Sony Honda,’ or a ‘Honda powered by Sony.’
“The new company will aim to bring together Honda’s cutting-edge environmental and safety technologies, mobility development capabilities, vehicle body manufacturing technology and after-sales service management experience, with Sony’s expertise in the development and application of imaging, sensing, telecommunication, network and entertainment technologies,” said Honda’s press release.
