Milan, Italy — Alfa Romeo’s latest vehicle, the 2023 Tonale is the first car in the world equipped with NFT certificates.
For the uninitiated, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are used as unique identifiers for digital files. Imagine a computer file, with a unique serial number and ownership records. In this case, Tolane’s NFT tracks the car’s usage, life cycle, ownership and other details.
Most importantly, NFT modified files are nearly impossible to modify, delete or edit: records are maintained on thousands of computers worldwide. Effectively, NFTs function as a digital fingerprint and record keeper.
According to their North American newsroom, NFTs can only record vehicle data and certify regular maintenance with owner consent. It also represents another source of credibility for dealers and owners in the pre-owned car market.
