Crashes of All Kinds: B.C. sees uptick in crash frequency, dip in severity, updated ICBC data says

Vancouver, British Columbia — British Columbia experienced nearly 25,000 more auto crashes in 2022 than 2021, but otherwise experienced somewhat reduced crash severity, according ICBC’s most recent data.

The province’s lower mainland was the most notably affected by this overall nine percent increase in crashes, experiencing an uptick of 18,117 crashes out of the total 24,217 recorded province-wide from 2021 to 2022.

Crash severity levels have either remained flat or slightly decreased over the past five years across B.C.’s four recognized regions (not including the “Unknown” category used in cases where data was unavailable), with only the North Central region experiencing a rise in casualty crashes of 19 cases.

Typical winter driving conditions continue to contribute to crash frequency being worst from October to January, with cases actually increasing by about 10 percent over the same four month span from 2021 to 2022.

A small gap in crash severity over that time period has appeared over time as well, as small increases in casualty crashes can be seen across December and January, whereas October and November saw rates of injury or death in a collision take a small dip.
