London, Ontario — An Ontario woman got a nasty surprise on her morning commute, when the sunroof of her 2023 Nissan Rogue exploded without warning.
According to CTV News, London, Ont. resident, Meaghan Maloney bought her SUV in December 2022, with the sunroof shattering one month later. She later learned that the sunroof was not included in the vehicle’s three-year warranty, leaving her to foot the $1,400 repair bill.
Transport Canada clarified that there have been 803 cases of shattering sunroofs since 2012, with 600 of them bursting between 2016 and 2020.
Following a review of Maloney’s case, Nissan promised to repair the sunroof as a goodwill gesture and provide Maloney with a rental vehicle. However, Didier Marsaud, Nissan’s director of corporate communications waived responsibility, claiming “we are not aware of any defects affecting the sunroof of the Nissan Rogue.”
According to Transport Canada, most sunroof breaks are caused by impact damage and not manufacturer defects. It did not comment the exact cause for Maloney’s shattered sunroof.
